The Johnston Brief
Johnston wraps the southeast side of Saylorville Lake, so real camping starts just about at the edge of town. Whether you've got a big RV, a rooftop/truck camper, or just a tent, there's a whole ring of it within about 45 minutes of Johnston - from the Corps campground right below the Saylorville dam to full-hookup lakeside sites and rustic, no-hookup primitive spots farther out. Here they all are, with the details that actually matter: hookups (or not), showers, cabins, and whether you can book online. Filter for “Primitive / no hookups” if you're set up to go off-grid.
Closest of all: Bob Shetler Rec Area, the Corps campground right in Johnston below the Saylorville dam (all electric, book on Recreation.gov) - with Cherry Glen, Prairie Flower and Acorn Valley around the rest of the lake. Want a cabin? Jester Park has four. Going rustic / no-hookup? Try Chichaqua Bottoms (drive-up + remote tent sites), Yellow Banks (primitive bluff & backpacking sites), or Hickory Grove. Worth the drive: Ledges. And note - Big Creek has no campground (day-use only).
Every spot above is public land you can count on. If you want private-land boondocking, farm stays, or unique overland pull-offs, those live on marketplace apps - Hipcamp, The Dyrt and iOverlander - where individual landowners list their own sites. We don't republish those private listings here, but for a rooftop or truck camper set up to go off-grid, that's where to look, alongside the rustic public sites above. Filter this finder by “Primitive / no hookups” for the no-services public options.
Site counts, hookups and amenities come from the public agencies that run each campground - the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Saylorville), the Iowa DNR (state parks), and Polk County Conservation - plus their reservation systems (Recreation.gov, the Iowa State Parks system, and MyCountyParks.com). Amenities and open dates shift season to season; confirm current details and availability when you book. Drive times are approximate from central Johnston.

Bob Shetler Recreation Area is the closest by a mile - it's a Corps campground right in Johnston, just below the Saylorville dam, only a few minutes from most of town, with all electric sites and tailwater fishing steps away. The rest of the Saylorville ring - Cherry Glen, Prairie Flower and Acorn Valley - is roughly 12-18 minutes out, all with electric sites and lake access. Book them on Recreation.gov.
No - Big Creek State Park is day-use only, with no campground. For camping near Big Creek, use the Saylorville Corps campgrounds or Jester Park, both just minutes away.
Jester Park has four modern rental cabins (one sleeps eight, three sleep six) with full kitchens and bathrooms - the easiest way to "camp" without a tent or RV.
For rustic public sites: Chichaqua Bottoms near Maxwell (drive-up non-electric plus remote tent-in spots), Yellow Banks in Pleasant Hill (primitive bluff & backpacking sites), or Hickory Grove near Colo (first-come tent-only). For a rooftop or truck camper, filter above by "Primitive / no hookups." Private-land boondocking and unique overland spots live on apps like Hipcamp, The Dyrt and iOverlander - those are private listings, not public land.
Ledges State Park near Madrid (~35 minutes) is worth the extra drive for its sandstone canyons and forest trails, with 94 campsites (40 electric).
