The Johnston Brief
Johnston is one of the metro's best towns for fishing without a long drive. Terra Lake sits right in town with an accessible pier, and two of central Iowa's biggest waters, Saylorville and Big Creek, are on the doorstep. Here's where to go, what you'll catch, and the license basics before you head out.
The in-town spot is Terra Lake at Terra Park - an 8-acre stocked lake with an accessible fishing pier, holding largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill. For bigger water, Saylorville Lake is on Johnston's doorstep and Big Creek State Park is a short drive north. Anyone 16+ needs an Iowa fishing license; add a trout fee if you want to keep trout.
This is the easiest fishing water in town. Terra Lake is an 8-acre lake stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill, with an accessible fishing pier and easy shoreline access. It's the centerpiece of Terra Park, a 200-plus-acre city park with trails, a playground and courts, and the city runs free kayaking June through September if you'd rather fish or paddle from the water. See our Terra Park guide for the full rundown.
When you want open water, two of central Iowa's better fisheries are minutes away. Saylorville Lake, the Army Corps reservoir with its dam in Johnston, holds walleye, white bass, crappie and catfish and has several public boat ramps. Just north, Big Creek State Park is a calm no-wake lake good for bass, bluegill, crappie and walleye, with strong shoreline access that's friendly to beginners. Both are open to public fishing with a valid Iowa license.
The Iowa DNR runs a community (urban) trout stocking program that drops rainbow trout into select Des Moines-metro ponds in fall and winter - a fun cold-weather outing when the bass slow down. Locations rotate year to year, so check the DNR community trout stocking schedule for the current metro list before you go.
Anglers 16 and older need an Iowa fishing license (kids under 16 fish free), sold through the Iowa DNR - online, on the app, or at license agents around the metro. Always check current size and creel limits on the DNR site, since they can change by water body and season.
