The Johnston Brief
Every fall the same questions land in every Johnston parent's inbox: how do I put money on the lunch account, do we qualify for free or reduced meals, and what happens if the balance runs out. Here is the whole thing in one place, so you can set it and forget it.
Johnston runs meal accounts through PayPAMS (paypams.com). Add money there by debit or credit card, check the balance, and turn on a low-balance alert so you are never caught out. Prefer not to pay online? Cash or check works at your school or the district Nutrition office. And if you may qualify, the free and reduced-price meal application is worth filing early.
The Johnston Community School District uses PayPAMS for online meal-account payments. To set it up you will need your child's student ID number, which you can find by logging into Infinite Campus. Then go to paypams.com, create an account, and add your student.
Once you are in, you can add money by debit or credit card, check the current balance, see recent purchases, and, the useful part, set a low-balance alert so you get a heads-up before the account hits zero. Online payments usually carry a small processing fee. Prefer not to pay online? You can send cash or a check to your child's school, or pay at the district Nutrition office, 6510 NW 62nd Ave, Johnston. Details are on the district's Meal Payments page.
Breakfast and lunch prices are set each year by the district and can change, so we do not print a figure that might go stale. See the live Johnston Nutrition Services page, or check your balance and prices right inside PayPAMS.
Families that qualify by household size and income can get meals free or at a reduced price through the federal National School Lunch Program. A few things worth knowing:
The Johnston Brief rounds up the dates, deadlines, and the stuff parents actually need every week: school calendar, meet-the-teacher nights, and what is happening in town. Free, every Monday at 7 AM.
No, not anymore. The pandemic-era period of free meals for all students ended after the 2021-22 school year, so Johnston families now pay for meals unless they qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the federal program. That is why keeping a little money on the PayPAMS account, and filing the free-and-reduced application if you might qualify, both matter again.
The district keeps a meal charge policy for exactly this. Its stated goals are that students still receive the nutrition they need to get through the day, that no child is singled out at the register over a low balance, and that the nonprofit nutrition program stays financially sound. Unpaid balances are tracked in the school nutrition fund, and families are asked to bring the account current. The simplest way to stay ahead of it is to turn on low-balance notifications in your account: Johnston balance notifications →

Turning on low-balance notifications is the easiest way to avoid a surprise negative balance.
