The Johnston Brief
Johnston is a serious youth-sports town, and a lot of that runs through a big indoor complex on one side and the city's outdoor parks and fields on the other. Here's what each has, what sports they host, and how to find games, leagues, or a tournament.
Johnston's sports hubs are Ignit, a large indoor sports and entertainment complex on Merle Hay Road (indoor track, full-size indoor soccer field, and multi-purpose courts), and the outdoor fields and courts at Terra Park (6400 Pioneer Pkwy) and the city's neighborhood parks. Between them they host leagues, camps, and tournaments year-round, run through City Parks & Recreation and local clubs.
For indoor and off-season play, Ignit is Johnston's large indoor sports and entertainment complex on Merle Hay Road. It's built for year-round play whatever the weather, with features that include:
Because it's indoor, Ignit keeps games and training going through the cold months. Programs, hours, and rentals change over time, so check Ignit's own page for the current schedule.
Johnston's outdoor recreation centers on Terra Park, the 200-plus-acre city park at 6400 Pioneer Pkwy, with an 8-acre stocked lake, a splash pad, pickleball and tennis courts, a playground, open space, and trails. Beyond it, athletic fields and courts are spread across the city's neighborhood parks, used for youth leagues, practices, and camps. The City of Johnston Parks & Recreation department manages field use and rentals. For the full park rundown, see our Terra Park guide and Johnston parks guide.
For lap and competitive swimming, the Summit Middle School Pool (9500 Windsor Pkwy) is an 8-lane competitive pool. In summer, the city pools and Terra Park's splash pad cover open swimming for families. See our things to do with kids guide for the current hours.
Between the indoor complex and the outdoor parks, Johnston hosts youth baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, and more, plus camps and clinics through the year. City Parks & Recreation and local sports clubs run most of the leagues and tournaments; the City of Johnston Parks & Recreation department (cityofjohnston.com) is the starting point for field rentals and city league info, while Ignit handles indoor court and field bookings.
Looking for open, drop-in recreation instead of leagues? See our guides to parks and playgrounds, the trails, Terra Park, and things to do with kids.
